How to Make Gyoza: A Step-by-Step Guide

Gyoza, or Japanese dumplings, are a delightful dish filled with a mixture of meat and vegetables, typically served with a soy-based dipping sauce. Follow this easy recipe to make your own gyoza at home!

Ingredients

  • 300g ground pork (or chicken)
  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 package of gyoza wrappers
  • Cooking oil (for frying)
  • Water (for steaming)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, chopped cabbage, green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 2: Assemble the Gyoza

Take a gyoza wrapper and place about one tablespoon of the filling in the center. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper in half to encase the filling, and pinch the edges together to seal, creating pleats along one side if desired.

Step 3: Cook the Gyoza

Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of oil. Once hot, place the gyoza in a single layer, making sure they don’t touch. Cook for about 2-3 minutes or until the bottoms are golden brown.

Add a splash of water to the pan (about 1/4 cup), cover immediately to steam the gyoza for about 4-5 minutes, or until the water has evaporated.

Step 4: Serve

Remove the lid and let the gyoza cook for an additional minute to crisp up the bottom. Serve hot with a dipping sauce made of soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil, if desired.
