Chicken Katsu
How to Make Chicken Katsu
Chicken Katsu is a delicious Japanese dish that features breaded and deep-fried chicken cutlets. It’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, making it a popular choice for many. Follow this simple tutorial to prepare your own Chicken Katsu at home.
Ingredients:
- 2 boneless chicken breasts
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Oil for frying
- Tonakatsu sauce (for serving)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
Start by placing the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap. Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to gently pound the chicken to about 1/2 inch thickness. This helps to tenderize the meat and ensures even cooking. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Step 2: Set Up Breading Station
Prepare three shallow dishes for the breading process:
- In the first dish, place the flour.
- In the second dish, beat the eggs.
- In the third dish, add the panko breadcrumbs.
Step 3: Bread the Chicken
Coat each chicken breast in flour, shaking off any excess, then dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally, press it into the panko breadcrumbs, ensuring an even coating.
Step 4: Fry the Chicken
In a large skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the breaded chicken. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
Step 5: Drain and Slice
Once cooked, remove the chicken from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Let it rest for a few minutes, then slice the chicken into strips.
Step 6: Serve
Serve the Chicken Katsu warm with tonkatsu sauce drizzled on top or on the side for dipping. It pairs wonderfully with steamed rice and shredded cabbage.
Enjoy your homemade Chicken Katsu!
