California Roll

How to Make California Roll

California roll is a popular sushi dish that is perfect for beginners. This sushi features a delicious combination of crab, avocado, and cucumber wrapped in rice and nori. Here’s a simple recipe to help you create your own California roll at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 sheets of nori (seaweed)
  • 1 cup imitation crab meat
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 small cucumber
  • Sesame seeds (optional)
  • Wasabi and soy sauce for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Sushi Rice

  • Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Combine rinsed rice and water in a pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for another 10 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Once the rice is ready, gently fold this mixture into the rice.

Step 2: Prepare the Fillings

  • Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and slice it thinly.
  • Peel the cucumber, cut it lengthwise, and remove the seeds. Then slice it into thin strips.
  • Shred the imitation crab meat into thin pieces.

Step 3: Assemble the California Roll

  • Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and cover it with plastic wrap.
  • Lay one sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down.
  • Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking and take a handful of sushi rice. Spread it evenly over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds over the rice if desired.
  • Along the bottom edge of the rice, arrange a line of crab, avocado, and cucumber.
  • Using the bamboo mat, roll the nori away from you, creating a tight cylinder. Apply gentle pressure as you roll.
  • Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

Step 4: Slice and Serve

  • Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into bite-sized pieces. Wet the knife between cuts to keep it clean.
  • Arrange the slices on a plate and serve with wasabi and soy sauce.
