Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2 ½ cups water
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 oz fresh salmon (sushi grade)
- Wasabi (optional)
- Soy sauce (for serving)
- Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Sushi Rice
1. Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
2. Combine the rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker or pot. Cook according to the rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
3. Once cooked, remove from heat and let it sit covered for 10 minutes.
4. In a small saucepan, heat the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt over low heat until sugar dissolves. Do not boil.
5. Transfer the rice to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Let the rice cool to room temperature.
Step 2: Prepare the Salmon
1. While the rice is cooling, take the fresh salmon and slice it into thin, even pieces (about ¼ inch thick).
2. Ensure your knife is sharp for clean cuts.
Step 3: Form the Nigiri
1. Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking. Take a small amount of sushi rice (about the size of a golf ball) and gently mold it into an oval shape.
2. Place a slice of salmon on top of the rice. Press gently to adhere the salmon to the rice.
3. Repeat the process until all the rice and salmon are used.
Step 4: Serve
1. Arrange the salmon nigiri on a serving plate.
2. Serve with wasabi and soy sauce on the side, and sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
Enjoy your homemade salmon nigiri!
